Abstract

Yani Widayati, NIM 15PSC01700 The Effectiveness of Concept Mapping to Enhance Students’ Writing Skill Viewed from Students’ Motivation (An Experimental Research at the Ninth Grade students of SMPN 2 KEPIL Wonosobo in the First Semester of the Academic Year of 2016/2017). Thesis: Language Education Programme, Widya Dharma University, Klaten, 2017. This research is aimed at; 1) to reveal the effectiveness of applying concept mapping to enhance the ninth grade student’s writing competence 2) to investigate whether the students of the ninth grade with high motivation get better learning outcomes than those with low motivation. In this study, researcher gave pre-test before giving treatments. The essay was evaluated based on 5 (five) aspects; the content, organization, vocabulary, language use, and mechanics (Heaton, 1988:146). The data in this research were obtained from the result of writing skill test and taking questionnaire. The technique used in analyzing the data was descriptive analysis and inferential analysis. Descriptive analysis was used to know the mean, median, mode and standard deviation of the scores of the writing test. To know the normality and the homogeneity of the data, the researcher used Chi Squad and Anova. The hypotheses of both concept mapping and student’s motivation were analyzed by T – test and Alpha Cronbach formula. Based on findings, the conclusion had been described as follows; 1) Concept Mapping was more effective than existing method to enhance students’ writing skill. It was proved by the increasing points of post-test results of experimental group taught by Concept Mapping was 77.88 and the score of control group taught by existing method; 72.43 (77.48 > 72.43). 2) The high-motivated students attained better learning achievement in their writing skill than those with low motivation. High motivated students gained mean scores of 79.45 and students having low motivation got 71.48. So, the implication of this research is that the English teacher is expected to be able to select teaching strategy matched to students’ uniqueness, preferences and learning style to boost their motivation to do more meaningful learning process so that their skill will significantly improve in attaining better learning outcomes.
