Abstract

Mesya Sukmayati. 1611200016. English Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Widya Dharma University, Klaten. 2020. Undergraduate Thesis: Assessing Students’ Writing Skills and Identifying Their Character-Based Learning Contribution through Mind Maps Model of the Tenth Graders of SMK Negeri 1 Klaten. This study aims to discover the tenth graders’ writing achievements and to investigate their character-based learning contibution in the writing class. This study involves thirty-six students of X AKL 3 class to be the respondents. They are engaged in applying for the mind maps model. This study was carried out by following a 5-Likert scoring rubric, namely: 5 = excellent, 4 = good; 3 = average, 2 = poor, and 1 = fail. Data analysis used the SPSS program accommodating descriptive and factor analysis to assess the tenth graders’ writing skills and to identify their character-based learning contribution during the class session. The result showed that the writing skills of the students and their character-based learning steadily improved. The comparison of the tenth graders’ result of writing in pre-test gained mean 66.25 and the post-test is 70.77. In addition, the results of tenth graders’ writing as shown in categorically gained in the following components: vocabulary (M = 3.61; SD = .688), grammar (M = 3.39; SD = .599), cohesion and coherence (M = 3.14; SD = .762), mechanics (M = 3.56; SD = .735), and content (M = 4.00; SD = .717). Meanwhile, the results of tenth graders’ self assessment were categorically gained in the following components: honesty (M = 2.11; SD = .318), cooperation (M = 3.38; SD = .644), communication (M = 2.25; SD = .439), and respectfulness (M = 3.47; SD = .696). This study was granted to be successful in evaluating the writing skills and character-based learning of the students through the mind maps model based on the results achieved in the test and questionnaire.
