Abstract

DIMAS BAGUS PRASETYA LULUK PAMUNGKAS, Student’s Number. 1811200001, English Education Study Program, the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Widya Dharma University, Klaten, 2022. Thesis. A TRANSLATION ANALYSIS OF PREPOSITION “AGAINST”IN HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN BY J.K. ROWLING. This study aims at finding out the translation methods used by the translator in translating preposition “against” in the Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J. K. Rowling into target language, finding out the variations of the translation of the prepositions “against” in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J. K. Rowling in the target language, and finding out why the prepositions “against” in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J. K. Rowling are not always equivalent in the target language. The data of this research were sentences containing preposition “against” found in HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN BY J.K. ROWLING. The data were analyzed by using qualitative method. The result of the study shows that the translator of Harry Potter And The Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling employs three translation methods, they are; word for word method (54 data), literal translation method (21 data), and free translation method (1 datum). Second, the preposition “against” has 15 variations in the target language, they are: berlatarbelakangkan, dari, dengan, di, dilatarbelakangi, ke, melawan, menimpa, menahan, menghadapi, melanggar, menantang, pada, terhadap, and untranslated. Third, the writer finds three data (data 005, 021, 040) which are classified as inequivalent. On those three data, the translator makes two mistakes, failing to translate the preposition “against” properly and omitting the preposition “against” in the translated version. Both mistakes caused low level of coherence and ambiguity. Key Word: Translation Analysis, Preposition, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
