Abstract

Dwi Handayani, No.1211202798, English Education Study Program, The Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Widya Dharma University, Klaten, Thesis: A Case Study of Teaching and Learning Speaking of the Eleventh Year Students of SMK N 1 Klaten in Academic Year of 2015/ 2016. This thesis aims at giving a description of the English teaching and learning speaking of the eleventh year students of SMK N 1 Klaten in Academic Year of 2015/2016. The writer did the interview with the English teacher and the students; and the observation of teaching and learning English process as the answer of the problem of this study: How is the process in teaching and learning speaking in the eleventh year students of SMK N 1 Klaten in Academic Year 2015/2016?, What are the factors which cause the problems in teaching and learning speaking in the eleventh year students of SMK N 1 Klaten in Academic Year 2015/2016?, How is the solution of the problems in the teaching and learning speaking in the eleventh year students of SMK N 1 Klaten in Academic Year 2015/2016? The strategy of this research is qualitative research. While the data are the facts about the activities in the teaching and learning speaking done by the eleventh year students of SMK N 1 Klaten in academic year 2015/2016. The sources of the data are event, informants and the document. Events are all activities related to the process of teaching and learning speaking in the eleventh year students of SMK N 1 Klaten in academic year of 2015/2016. The informants are the teacher and students. The documents are lesson plan, syllabus, and textbook. In collecting the data, the writer uses observation, interview and documentation. Then in order to get accurate data, the writer uses source triangulation and method triangulation to check the validity of the data. After that, the writer analyzes the data by doing data collection period, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. After analyzing the data, the writer finds: 1) the process of teaching and learning speaking consists of the teacher’s preparation, the activity, the material, the method, media, and evaluating in teaching and learning speaking of the eleventh year students of SMK N 1 Klaten; 2) The factors which cause the problems in teaching nd learning speaking in the eleventh year students of SMK N 1 Klaten are: the students are lack of motivation, the surrounding students’ area and the limit time allocation; 3) The solutions from the teacher to overcome the obstacles found in teaching and learning speaking in the eleventh year students of SMK N 1 Klaten are: The teacher asks the students to memorize some new words. By memorizing the new vocabulary, they can enrich the vocabulary and the teacher also gives the motivation by telling the students the importance of speaking.
