Abstract

Ardian Eko Sajaril. NIM. 15PSC01749. Structural Analysis and Social Function in a Collection of West Papuan Folklore. Thesis. Study Program Master of Language Education, Graduade Program in Widya Dharma University of Klaten. 2017 The purpose of this study is (1) describe the structure of collection of west Papuan folklore; and (2) describe the function of the story in a collection of west Papuan folklore. The description of the structure of folklore includes themes, plot, character, setting, and mandate. The description of function in folklore include (1) as a projection system or as a reflection tool of the collective members whises, (2) as a means of entertainment, (3) as an educational too for children, (4) as a means of social control, (5) inauguration of social solidarity, (6) group identity, (7) communal harmonization,and (8) as a test of kings, leaders, and people who are considered sacred, sacred, and authoritative or collective. This study is a descriptive ualitative research. The information from this study is described analytically and thoroughly. Strategy used is single case study conducted on one (subject) target and one characteristic, that is west Papuan folklore. Research data collected throught direct source of the folklore book Irian Jaya region of the Department of Education and Local Culture. Data collection techniques used are document analysis. Data collections tool are researchs as key instrument. The technique of checking the validity of the data used is confirmability testing the result of research with the process undertaken. The data analysis technique used used is the analysis of the data itself in accordance with this research. In this study the are five west Papuan folk tales collected and analyzed. Five folklore, namely: (1) Yambin, (2) Cassowary Story, (3) The Occurrence of Bird of Paradise, (4) Mohway, (5) Deluge. Theme and contents of west Papuan folklore is the struggle of a citizen, the story of a bird, the beginnings of birds of paradise, and the origin of the sawoy clan. The storyline used is a forwards or straight line. The dominant figure in west Papuan folklore is varied, there is a man who is described as a man of good and bad character, and also the animals. The most dominant setting is the backdrop. The mandate contained in the folklore of west Papuan folk is very varied, about goodness, selfishness, fortitude, and hard work. And social functions in the collection of west Papuan folklore as an educational tool for children, means of entertainment, projection systems, communal harmonization, social identity, social solidarity social control tools, and praise of the king.
