Abstract

Yantilah. Effective Strategy on Crossword Puzzle to Develop Reading and Writing Paragraph Skill in Javanese Letter. Experimental Study on Grade 8, second semester of Students of SMP N 2 Mojotengah Wonosobo, in 2015—2016. Thesis. Language Education Study Program, Graduate Program, Widya Dharma University Klaten. 2017. One of the local subject lessons in high school level on Central Java Province is Javanese language. The lesson, particularly in SMP Negeri 2 Mojotengah, is applied by teacher using conventional strategy in which the students feel bored. Therefore, it needs to change the lesson strategy in order to improve students‘ marks more optimal than the previous ones. One of the lesson strategies is applying crossword puzzle. It can stimulate students to comprehend more optimal, for it is pleasant and is like word guess through crossword puzzle. The aim of the research is to find out differences of study activities result of students of VIII grade in Javanese language subject on reading and writing paragraph in Javanese letter by applying crossword puzzle and convention strategies. Population in this research was 56 students of VIII grade, SMP Negeri 2 Mojotengah. They were from two classes with 26 samples of VIII B class and 26 samples of VIII C class. The experiment design used in this research was quasy experimental design with non-equivalent control group design. The statistic analysis used was product moment correlation for validity and cronbach’s alpha test for instrument reliability test. Testing data normality used Liliefors method, while homogeneity and t test for hypotheses test used independent samples t test method. All the calculation shows initial test value average on experimental class 47,94 and control class 45,12, while for final test value average on experiment class 78,73 and control class 67,67. For t test result shows that value of t count=2,374 and its significance amount 0,021. Value of t table with dk=52 and α = 0,025 is 2,007. It means t count >t table (2,374>2,007) or its significance 0,021 < 0,025, so the conclusion says that there is differences significantly of the result to study Bahasa Jawa with the material, reading and writing paragraph in Javanese letter among students of VIII B class in SMP Negeri 2 Mojotengah who obtained lesson by applying crossword puzzle strategy and VIII C class who applying conventional strategy. Thus, it is suggested to teacher to apply crossword puzzle in teaching the material.
